Why You Should Attend – A GYC Testimony

Thank you to AHE Mom Tami  for sharing her family’s experiences with GYC.

GYC (Generation of Youth for Christ) is a conference once a year that is for a targeted age group of 18-35 in the Seventh day Adventist church. http://gycweb.org/   However, did you know a lot of families also attend as well as older folk??  It is true!!  I would encourage you to check out the GYC website and click on the ‘At the Cross’ convention box on the main page for more details on this year’s conference.  This year it will be held in Phoenix, AZ,  December 31, 2014—Jan 4, 2015.  For those of us on the west coast this is GOOD news!

When our family attended GYC for the first time 7 yrs ago my husband and I were shocked.  We had no idea that there was that many young adults (thousands of them) in the Adventist church that were wanting to do more than just go to church every week!   These kids were on fire for the Lord and we were amazed and thrilled to see this!!  We then looked at each other and said we have to go to GYC every year!  Besides hearing about what these young people are doing for the Lord, you will also have many opportunities through individual seminars speakers and evening meetings that will grow you spiritually and inspire you to be the servant the Lord wants us all to be.

The food is good and is vegan.  They provide two meals a day, breakfast and late lunch.  People that want to eat supper just go to eat at area restaurants.  There is a exhibit hall where many ministries and schools have booths.  This also gives students a opportunity to learn about several SDA colleges or academies as well as ministries.

Is there evangelism?  YES!  Half of one of the conference days there is opportunity to evangelize the city where the conference is being held.  In the past there has been health expo, door to door work, local area door to door work as well.  Last year many buses picked up conference attendees (all ages) and took them to go door to door in different communities.  Many people sign up for Bible studies….it is really amazing to hear what happens during the evangelism report that evening or the next morning in the mtg.  There no meetings for small children.  They have also had a volunteer orchestra as well as choir almost every year I believe.

We continue to attend GYC as a family vacation.  We get to see different parts of the country each year and attend a conference that continues to inspire us to grow our Christian walk with the Lord.  We hope to see each of you there this year!!  Email if you have questions:  Tami:  beatys4@hotmail.com

Thinking About High School ~ English/Language Arts

Thinking about high school English/Language Arts (ELA) curriculum? Things to consider as you make your choices: What are your student’s future educational goals? Is your student planning to pursue vocational training or attend a college/university? What are your student’s strengths and weaknesses when it comes to reading and written communication skills.

high school englishVocational training programs will require basic technical reading comprehension skills as well as basic writing abilities. Your student will also need to be able to communicate effectively on written tests. It might be a good idea to compare your student’s abilities with the minimum high school competencies for ELA in your local area. Many high school competency ELA tests mirror the level of essential skills needed for success in vocational studies.

If your student is planning to complete a degree program at a college or university, then your focus will be different. Acquiring strong composition skills, especially in the areas of report of information, persuasive and analytical writing will be a priority. A college-bound student will also want to develop an outlining/note-taking strategy to help with keeping track of lecture information.

What to do for literature studies? The answer is one of personal family preference. Many SDA families choose to exclude fiction from literature study. It is important to note that literature study can be accomplished without fiction: essays, biographies, journals and other non-fictions works can provide the foundation for analytical writing, one of the main purposes for literature study.

Continued grammar or vocabulary lessons and the study of Greek/Latin roots can be helpful for students preparing to take the SAT or ACT.

Wish Books for Science-Minded Homeschoolers

I see youWhen I was young, I looked forward to the arrival of the fall department store catalogs in the mail.  I would spend hours poring over the ‘wish books’ making lists of things that I wanted to save up to buy.

I consider these science catalogs are the equivalent of wish books for science-minded homeschoolers.  We love to get all four of these catalogs in the mail!   My children have marked the pages with kits or equipment that looks exciting to them and made lists of items to save up to purchase.  I’ll readily admit that I’ve marked up these science catalogs as well, with all the science curriculum kits, materialsscience 3 and supplements that I’d like to use.    I have ordered curriculum materials, lab equipment, microscope slides, dissections sets, etc. from these companies as well and have been nothing but satisfied.

I’ve linked to the catalog request portion of each site, but these companies also have online catalogs as well for immediate browsing.

Read To Me

One of the first steps of teaching reading is to read aloud to your child.   Spend some time reading aloud to your children, as well as discussing what you have read.   You will soon discover that the benefits reach far beyond developing and strengthening reading skills.

A bedtime story

Leave a comment and share what you are currently reading aloud to your child(ren).

Hymns and Scripture Songs as Music Study

An interesting way to add music to your home school curriculum is with the study of hymns  and/or the memorization of Scripture songs.       The use hymns and Scripture songs for music can easily be tailored to fit your family.

The value of song as a means of education should never be lost sight of. Let there be singing in the home, of songs that are sweet and pure, and there will be fewer words of censure, and more of cheerfulness and hope and joy.

Organize Your Study

Choose the number of hymns and/or scripture songs that you would like to study for the year.  Some families prefer to concentrate on just one hymn or song per month, others may rotate through two or three at one time.  You could further refine your hymn/song study to align with your Bible curriculum or a particular period in history.  It might be interesting to study several hymns from one author, or choose hymns that fit a particular theme. You could select the hymns sung by church pioneers  or choose to learn  new hymns to add to your family’s worship repertoire.

In regards to hymn study, there are so many details to choose from that will make your study interesting:choirbook21
*Author of the hymn
*Composer of the music
*History of the tune if is a traditional tune
*Scriptural reference that goes with the tune
*Date and circumstances behind the hymn
*The hymn as poetry
*Memorize the hymn
*Learn to play the hymn on whatever instrument you choose
*Object lessons that the hymn may teach
*Using the lyrics for handwriting practice/copy work
*Listening to both instrumental and vocal versions of the hymn
